Allie X Drops Another Synth-Pop Salvo With “Prime”: Listen

Carl Williott | March 18, 2014 9:53 am

When we spoke to Allie X last week, she told us she had a new single on the way, and in the wee hours this morning (March 18) she delivered on her promise, putting “Prime” online. Whereas the plush “Catch” swooped in and soared, this one is a tad knottier, with several moving parts as the quirky vocal tics and jittery synths parry each other before you can absorb the chorus. The lyrics are delivered rapidly, as Allie uses the over-enunciation of a space queen, and right when you become acclimated, whoa, the future-pop morphs into a New Wave sax bridge.

The production is again stellar, and while “Prime” is less immediate than her debut single, it’s just as engaging and might even be more rewarding with repeat listens. No matter how you approach it, though, the song is really fun.
