Emeli Sande’s Obscure, Pre-Fame Single “Takes” Finally Surfaces Online: Listen

Before becoming a household name in the UK (and budding international star) with blockbuster hits “Heaven”, “Next To Me” and “My Kind Of Love”, Emeli Sande released a long-forgotten song on obscure jazz/soul label Starla Records. “Takes” was only released on limited edition 7″ vinyl and, somewhat miraculously given her success, never surfaced online until now.

Finally tracked down by a Scottish newspaper, “Takes” is a fascinating snapshot of a hugely talented artist still calibrating her sound. The retro-soul anthem is an enjoyable Motown knock-off and there’s no denying the quality of Emeli’s voice but it would take her another couple of years to perfect her winning approach to soul-infused pop. Listen to the lovely relic after the jump.
