Monica Birkenes does gloomily gorgeous lo-fi pop (with an electronic twist) better than just about anyone, which you probably already know if you’ve had the pleasure of hearing synth-rock stunner “Runaway” or beautifully understated choral anthem “Oh Sailor”. Those tracks are included on the album but don’t overshadow the new material.
Take current single “Good Mistake”. It’s a phenomenally catchy indie-pop excursion that finds the Scandinavian diva in an unusually upbeat mood, while “Haunted” sounds like Ladyhawke circa “Back Of The Van” on valium. My favorite track is achingly pretty ballad “Heaven Sent”, which demands your immediate attention. Listen to Pocketknife after the jump.
