Ryan Tedder was recently crowned the ‘Undercover King of Pop’ by Billboard magazine for his own achievements with OneRepublic and his incredible track record as a songwriter for other artists including Demi Lovato. He wrote her current hit “Neon Lights” but it turns out the soaring dance anthem started life under a slightly different name.

The “Counting Stars” singer recently shared his demo — called “Broken Lights” — and it’s fascinating to hear the song’s journey from the 34-year-old’s pen to Demi’s album. The finished version is faithful to Ryan’s original apart from a lyric change in the chorus. “We’ll be going out like broken lights” was swapped for the glitzier “we’ll be burning up like neon lights”. Listen after the jump.

By far the weakest song Ryan Tedder has wrote. It’s absolutely terrible and I can see why it’s on the radio at the moment.
I thought Demi was over the whole EDM/dubstep sound or did I read that wrong?

I think Demi’s team chose Neon Lights as the song to give the most promo to, so that’s why it’s the one most played. It’s not her style, but Hollywood Records has her by a claw so hopefully she leaves and can put something quality out.
