Ashanti dropped her first album in six (long) years last month and promptly racked up her fifth consecutive top 10 hit on the Billboard 200. The success of Braveheart, which the much-loved R&B diva recorded and released independently, proves that there’s still a market for old school R&B — particularly when it’s executed with this much skill and sincerity.

The boss of Written Entertainment dropped by the Idolator studio to talk about Braveheart and explained why the opus took so long to create. She also clarified why songs like “The Woman You Love” were left off the LP and discussed the pros and cons of releasing music independently. The stunning 33-year-old also revealed the name of her next single. Watch up top.
