Zella Day Debuts With The Enchanting “Sweet Ophelia”: Listen

Meet Zella Day, an Arizona singer who grew up covering legends like Elvis and Bob Dylan at her parents’ coffee house, and who may have flashed onto your radar a couple years ago with her lovely, spare cover of The White Stripes‘ “Seven Nation Army.” Day is now ready to break out with her own material, starting this week with the release of her debut 7″ on B3SCI featuring the stellar A-side “Sweet Ophelia.”

The track begins with stomping percussion and smoky coos, but rises to the sort of soaring chorus that you almost never hear on a debut release. It’s like some mystical California desert chant-turned-love ballad that never tries to pummel the listener or prove its epic might — and that’s largely thanks to Day’s voice, which has expanded in range and emotion since that Stripes cover.

Stream the song below, and check out the equally entrancing music video up top.
