BANKS Announces Debut LP ‘Goddess’: Hear The Title Track

Elegantly brooding R&B singer BANKS today (April 28) announced her debut album, the aptly titled Goddess, and it’s set for a September 9 release. Along with the announcement came the premiere of the title track — a nervy, hazy number produced by Lil Silva that finds BANKS calmly warning “You’re fuckin’ with a goddess and you get a little colder.”

The song never quite breaks out and wows listeners here the way “Brain” does by the end; instead, it’s impressive on a micro level. The California singer’s voice quavers and background chants envelop everything, while the nebulous arrangement sounds like the rolling percussion of Phil Collins‘ “Take Me Home” and the jittery syncopation of Timbaland collided while submerged in swamp water.
