Pharrell’s “Smile”: Hear The ‘G I R L’ Bonus Track

[Obligatory opening sentence addressing the similarity of the titles “Happy” and “Smile.”] Pharrell‘s G I R L was released in Japan today (April 30) and with it came a Japan-only bonus track called “Smile.” Thankfully, we no longer live in a world where you have to wait for Sam Goody to randomly stock up on a few import copies of an album in order to get your hands on alternate international cuts, so we can hear it now.

The mid-tempo song is built on a piano melody and ceaseless hi-hats, with some low-key bits of modern pop gloss thrown in — it’s kind of like if Pharrell were to produce a Sara Bareilles song. Like “Happy,” it’s filled with cheery platitudes about taking a glass-is-half-full approach, and we have to hand it to him for the clever cheese of the line “A smile is a curve that sets everything straight.”

Hear it below.
