Whatcha Say: Ariana Grande, Mariah Carey and Adam Lambert Got Our Readers Talking

Bradley Stern | May 2, 2014 5:30 pm

Happy May and Happy Friday, Idolator readers! This month certainly started off with a bang, courtesy of a legendary industry vet — an elusive chanteuse to be exact! Yes, Mariah Carey certainly stole the show this week with her not-so-surprise surprise announcement of her insanely-titled album. Meanwhile, Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea got us dancing at the beginning of the week with their sax-heavy summer kiss-off, “Problem.” And then, there were the iHeartRadio Awards which were, well…at least Adam Lambert looked nice in his suit!

This week also saw some major skin-baring, including iHeartRadio winner RiRi stripping down for Lui, Mariah‘s lingerie-baring Wonderland cover and Rita Ora losing her top for Terry Richardson. (We’ve rounded up the best magazine covers of May in the latest Ibrawlator — which one is your favorite?)

Bey & Jay‘s insanely priced On The Run Tour tickets went on sale, which provoked some hilarious reactions, while “Love Never Felt So Good,” the lead single from Michael Jackson’s posthumous Xscape (which features Justin Timberlake!) made its grand debut overnight. Plus, we’re looking back at April and asking you to vote for your favorite record between acts like Iggy Azalea, Kelis and Jason Derulo. Have you voted yet? As always, you guys had plenty to say. Check out the week’s best comments below!

:: Lizzie saw Mariah’s new album title and remembered another industry legend on Mariah Carey’s New Album Has A Completely Absurd Title & Tracklist: “It immediately brought to mind Ashlee Simpson’s second album “I Am Me,” only Mariah’s is more embarrassing even with the explanation.”

:: And MusicManDave was focused on the music (of course!) on We Are All Mariah: The Internet Responds To Mimi’s Astounding Album Title: “Who cares about the album title anyway??? Its all about making a great hit record. Let’s hope there is at least 1 hit on this album. I am beginning to think that Mariah has lost her groove as a hit maker. Is it her age? Is it that she is a mother of 2? Is it her on going Diva moments? etc. I want the old Mariah back. The woman who we all fell in love with in the 90′s.”

:: drew is definitely pro-Rih, but had no idea why she was taking all the trophies on iHeartRadio Music Awards 2014: The Full List Of Winners: “I like Rih Rih (when she’s not collaborating with Chris Brown), but I didn’t feel like this last year was her year, as reflected in the winners. Hrmph…”

:: Barbara was in Lambert Love with Adam Lambert‘s Glambert-approved green suit at the iHeartRadio Awards on The iHeartRadio Music Awards 2014: Adam Lambert Rocks A Green Suit: “Suave, classy and so talented! Yes, the pop world is so much more interesting with him in it. Adam doesn’t believe in genres, so I am keeping my fingers crossed that he will come out with a blend of genres in his next album.”

:: Shley was a bit perplexed by Iggy and Lorde’s stance on Lorde Defends Iggy Azalea From Music Critics: Morning Mix: “This is what I don’t get about what Lorde said. So if you’re on the cover of a magazine you should be automatically given a positive review of your album in said magazine? I know the both go on to say about how journalists beg for tickets to their shows only to trash it…etc..etc…but couldn’t they have just not liked it? To be fair “The New Classic” has gotten rather mediocre reviews for most critics anyway. I love them both but I don’t quite agree with what they have to say. Journalists review albums and concerts based on how they hear/see it. Isn’t that their job? To give their take on something?”

:: Deb was both impressed and unsurprised by Iggy’s debut on the Billboard charts this week on ‘Frozen’ & Future Ice Iggy Azalea On The Album Chart: “55,000 is a respectable for someone who’s single only became a hit like a month ago. Even Lea Michele, who has had about 5 years of “Glee” behind her and a devoted fan base, and is a household name, could only muster 62,000 her first week out. The fact that Iggy isn’t a household name, and prior to “Fancy,” garnered buzz from rap fans for her mixtapes, is a pretty decent start. Time will tell if subsequent singles will live up to the success of “Fancy,” though after listening to the album nothing quite reaches those heights.”

:: Charlie took stanning to a WHOLE new level after seeing Ariana’s performance on Ariana Grande Debuts “Problem” With Sexy Radio Disney Music Awards Performance: Watch: “Ariana totally rocked it at the RDMAs. Not to compare or anything, but her performance kind of reminded me of a young Britney Spears starting out (I thought her outfit reminded me of the red catsuit from the Oops! video, her moves totally made her a “slave” to the music and this performance was like Britney’s VMA 2000 performance of Satisfaction and Oops! where she started to come out of her shell). Ariana is definitely going to be the next big artist and all of the other artists who are coming out now better watch out!”

:: ICYNDICEY was apparently feeling the impact of the 10th anniversary of Mean Girls when it came to Lady Gaga‘s “G.U.Y.” on Lady Gaga’s Onslaught Of “G.U.Y.” Remixes Continues: Listen To St. Lucia’s Feel-Good Overhaul: “Gretchen…Stop trying to make FETCH HAPPEN. It’s NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! She needs to put this album to rest. IT’S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!”

:: Swizz found our round-up of writer-heavy pop tunes to be proof that Taylor Swift takes the crown on It Takes A Village: 10 Pop Hits That Took At Least 6 Writers To Cobble Together, From “Drunk In Love” To “Timber”: “This is why Taylor is better than the rest of the pop musicians out there. Sure, she collaborates with a co-writer here and there, but her music is unequivocally her voice. Everybody else has boilerplate songs that are just passed from singer to singer until someone says “yes” to it.”

:: Rodrigo found Justin Timberlake’s inclusion on anything Jackson-related to be extra offensive on Michael Jackson’s “Love Never Felt So Good” Features Justin Timberlake: “Forgotten what he did to Janet letting her take all the blame? Do you think Michael would approve it scared after what happened with his younger sister? I ask this question to the true fans of Michael … Do you really think he would approve?”

:: And finally, Kay Davis agreed with our good and bad (but mostly bad) assessment of the iHeartRadio Awards on iHeartRadio Music Awards: 10 Extremely Bad Moments & 5 Good Ones To Learn By: “Overall you are right on with the 89% bad. “Wrecking Ball” winning best lyrics? One of the low points of the awards. Just to be fair to Lorde and Miley — they are both not well. Kesha is still working on getting her life back in order. The one bad you did not mention was that although this was an NBC command appearance for The Voice “coaches”, Adam Levine did not show up. And, seriously, if you have Adam Lambert in the house, and two hours filled with a lot of useless stuff, have the man sing something!!”
