Floyd and I always listened to the Flaming Lips,” Miley Cyrus recently said.

The past few months have alluded to as much: In February, Lips front man Wayne Coyne and drummer Steven Drozd joined Cyrus on stage to perform 2002’s “Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Part 1,” after she read a Rolling Stone interview where Coyne said, “I like her aesthetic more than a Lady Gaga.” The next month, the band and MGMT‘s Andrew VanWyngarden backed Cyrus in a cover of The Beatles‘ “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.”

And that was only the beginning. Cyrus has revealed to RS that she and the Flaming Lips have written songs together for her next album, which she hopes they’ll cut after her current tour.

“On my last record [Bangerz], everything we did was with computers,” she says. “But they’re real musicians – they can change keys on a whim. I’ve never seen anything like it. They’ve had me on this journey that’s greater than anything I’ve been on. It’s really deep.” According to Cyrus, her relationship with the band extends outside the studio, as well. They’ve gone clubbing, seen 2 Chainz live and gotten lip tattoos together.
