Debbie Harry Speaks Out On Celebrity Elevator Violence At ‘The Daily Show’: Watch
Blondie‘s Debbie Harry recently cut to the heart of the Solange–Jay Z elevator fight: “If private elevator violence isn’t stopped, the day may soon come where celebrities have to take the stairs,” she said, in a fake PSA filmed for The Daily Show. “Do you want to live in that world? I know I don’t.”
Blondie was the Daily Show‘s musical guest on May 13, though like the general public, the new wave pioneers could not escape the media frenzy following the Met Gala incident. The episode aired right as details continue to surface, too. The New York Standard Hotel employee who leaked the footage was caught and fired, according to AP. In far less believable news, New York Daily News reports that the fight started when Jay Z made plans to attend a Rihanna-hosted after-party without Beyonce.
For now, what’s important to note is that Harry’s sign (above) actually refers to a Daily Show skit from earlier this week. On May 9, conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh, who recently criticized Beyonce’s Monica Lewinsky lyric in “Partition,” mocked First Lady Michelle Obama‘s support of the #BringBackOurGirls campaign, which seeks to raise awareness of the mass kidnapping of more than 200 Nigerian girls. In response, Daily Show host Jon Stewart started the hashtag pictured above.
That said, the sign made for a swift, necessary reminder that yes the world actually extends a lot further than that Standard Hotel elevator. Watch the hilarious sketch up top, then see the ever-excellent Blondie perform its new single “Sugar on the Side” below.
