Whatcha Say: Nicki Minaj, Michael Jackson And Richard Marx Got Our Readers Talking

Bradley Stern | May 23, 2014 5:30 pm

Happy Friday, Idolator readers! We hope you’re all about to enjoy a nice long weekend away. As always, there was much to talk about in this week of pop.

We kicked off with a bang on Sunday with the Billboard Music Awards, featuring performances from the likes of everyone from Pitbull and Jennifer Lopez to Iggy Azalea and Ariana Grande. Plus, Mariah Carey, Robyn & Royksopp and Cher Lloyd ALL debuted the full streams for their long awaited albums.

Whips and chains evidently excite pop divas Madonna and Katy Perry, who tag-teamed on the surprise cover of V Magazine this week. Lea Michele got sultry in the video for “On My Way.” Michelle Williams got us holy twerking with Kelly, Solange and Beyonce on “Say Yes.” And the winners were officially crowned this week on both The Voice Season 6 and American Idol Season 13!

Right here on Idolator, we had the pleasure of debuting Richard Marx‘s stunning comeback track “Whatever We Started.” Our monthly Magazine Melee is in full swing between Beyonce, Rihanna, Lily Allen, Madonna and Katy Perry and Solange. (Have you voted yet?) Plus, we launched a giveaway for tickets to The Thank You Festival in DC. As always, you guys had plenty to say. Read the week’s best comments below!

:: aerogens was shocked people still cared for will.i.am on Will.i.am Debuts New Song “Birthday”: Listen: “Goodness, I can’t believe there are people who still love his music. After that flop #willpower album and the fiasco that was Britney Jean, he’s lost all credibility in my eyes. What happened to the good ‘ole Black Eyed Peas days?”

:: When Forbes claimed that Iggy was running hip-hop, yeahrightallnite kept it short and sweet on Nicki Minaj Talks ‘Forbes’ Claiming Iggy Azalea Runs Hip-Hop: “No Thank You”: “Iggy has a hot single = she’s running hip-hop? Stick to finance.”

:: While Sarah wished for more girl power: “She could’ve at least gave Iggy some props for achieving some success, something VERY hard for female rappers these days as she should know. But oh well, I guess she isn’t about ” female unity ” as she claimed in the beginning after everyone said she wanted to be the only female rapper doing something on the mainstream, shame.”

:: We made Shan go breathless on Richard Marx Returns With A Vengeance: Watch The Pop Veteran’s “Whatever We Started” Video: “Loved him in the 80′s. Fell in love all over again with his new release. Reminds of a period in my life that still takes my breath away when I think of it.”

:: Christian was somewhat disappointed by Nicki’s soft return on Nicki Minaj’s “Pills N Potions”: Listen: “It’s definitely not a ‘return to hip-hop,’ but it does show a vulnerable side to Nicki we haven’t seen since “Pink Friday.” It brings to mind songs like ‘Your Love,’ and ironically enough, ‘Dear Old Nicki.'”

:: And xSushi was ready to drink to that: “I was expecting something harder, but it’s an enjoyable track for a moment of quiet introspection at the end of a long day. I’ll add it to my “Glass of Wine” playlist. Haha.”

:: While MusicManDave hoped this would bring some success for Miss Minaj: “Now this is a pretty stripped down song from the rap/pop diva. I wasn’t expecting it and came straight out of left field. I like it and should do well on the charts. An emotional ballad with Nicki’s signature print on it.”

:: Pablo found the S&M-themed shoot between Madonna and Katy to be a match made in heaven on Madonna And Katy Perry’s Stunning S&M-Themed ‘V’ Magazine Spread Is Finally Here: “That’s cute, I like them as friends. They’re both kinda bitchy.”

:: Evelyn was quick to qualify Michael Jackson‘s new record on Michael Jackson Becomes The First Solo Artist To Land Top 10 Hits In 5 Different Decades: “Sorry to burst your bubble but CLIFF Richard had NO1 hits in 5 consecutive decades and Top ten hits in 6 Consecutive Decades….. As much as I love Michael Jackson you CANNOT take this accolade away from CLIFF !!!!!!!”

:: Daniel was massively underwhelmed by Cher Lloyd’s latest on Cher Lloyd’s ‘Sorry I’m Late’: Stream The Full Album: “A disappointing follow-up to the very solid Sticks + Stones. No real stand-out tracks, and her sound has been predominantly Americanised, especially with the Demi Lovato-esque Sirens (which I find so underwhelming).”

:: While John was already looking into the future: “I can’t picture anyone beating that record, but I can think of two people who could tie it: Mariah Carey and Justin Timberlake.”

:: Tell It Straight told their feelings straight about Selena Gomez on Selena Gomez ‘Takes Back Her Power’ By Posting A Sexy Bikini Pic On Instagram: “Anyone would think this girl had survived a war in Iraq the way she carries on. And I can’t stand all that therapy talk. Just f*$”ing get on with it Selena. You’re a very rich girl, with basic talent who went back to JB of your own free will. It didn’t work out. Cool. Get on with it. Real people are dealing with real s&$”! out here. Oh, and no-one believes you went into rehab because you were addicted to him either. Diva.”

:: And finally, Mark wasn’t buying Charlie Sheen’s weepy tale on Rihanna Is An “Idiot” With A “Bad Wig” According To Charlie Sheen: See The Actor’s Twitter Rant: “He probably snapped his fingers, and said, “Hey Rihanna.” Glad, you could meet me. This must be a big moment for you..Could you grab a pitcher of water, on the way over?”
