Kimbra’s “90s Music (M-Phazes Remix)”: Idolator Premiere

Earlier this month, Kimbra took a further sonic step away from her debut LP Vows and, especially, her Grammy-winning duet with Gotye, “Somebody That I Used To Know,” with the release of offbeat new track “90s Music.” (Available now at digital retailers like iTunes.) The song itself doesn’t sound much like any actual ’90s music we grew up with, musically. But lyrically the experimental synth jam paints a cute picture of a time the New Zealand singer clearly idealizes.

Now Australian producer M-Phazes (who twiddled the knobs on Eminem‘s The Marshall Mathers LP 2 cut “Bad Guy”) has given “90s Music” an overhaul. His mix kicks off with finger snaps and eventually works itself into trappy handclaps before finally spinning itself into a full-on dance groove.

You may recall that the Gold Coast producer first remixed Kimbra’s 2012 single “Settle Down.” Today we’re premiering his take on “90s Music,” which you can get nostalgic with below.

Kimbra’s “90s Music” is out now. Her sophomore LP The Golden Echo will be released in August by Warner Bros.
