Adam Levine Previews New Song “Lost Stars” In ‘Begin Again’ Trailer: Watch

Adam Levine makes his film debut in Begin Again (opening June 27), though his role isn’t exactly a stretch. He plays a rock star who finally lands a big recording deal and starts to earn recognition. (“Are you Dave Kohl?” a fan asks.) Plus, a new song featured in the trailer, “Lost Stars,” recalls Levine’s own humbler beginnings: when pop-rock outfit Kara’s Flowers reconvened and embraced R&B as Maroon 5. He comes close to crying out the few falsetto notes heard here, even as the understated acoustic ballad starts to build.

But the resemblance between Levine’s film role and real life is hardly a reason to write off Begin Again. The move was directed by John Carney of Once fame, where The Swell Season‘s Glen Hasard and Marketa Irglova charmed critics by playing two musicians who fall in love as they write music, despite not having any prior acting experience. Begin Again also stars Kiera Knightly as Levine‘s girlfriend, who teams with Mark Ruffalo as a producer  and Cee Lo Green as Cee Lo Green (or so it seems, anyway).

The Begin Again soundtrack is out July 1. Watch the trailer featuring Levine’s “Lost Stars” up top.
