Ameriie Returns With “What I Want”: Listen To The R&B Diva’s First Single In 5 Years

Amerie or Ameriie, as she now spells it, was one of R&B’s leading ladies for much of the ’00s — racking up two top 10 albums as well as featuring on hits from LL Cool J and Ricky Martin. But then she got caught in a label shuffle and lost momentum. The last we heard from her was in 2009 when her actually very good In Love & War LP stalled at number 46 on the Billboard 200. (“Swag Back” and “Dear John” remain great).

Well, it’s time to welcome the 34-year-old diva back to the game. Ameriie returns today (June 3) with a new single called “What I Want”, which picks up where her signature song “1 Thing” left off — by embracing a retro-soul sound with real instruments and a funky sample (in this case, Sugarhill Gang’s “Apache (Jump On It)”). It’s a genuinely great track that also happens to be right on-trend thanks the old school R&B revival lead by acts like Beyonce, Miguel and Mariah Carey. Listen after the jump.
