Mariah Carey’s ‘Elusive Chanteuse’ Suffers Terrible Debut, Coldplay’s ‘Ghost Stories’ Remains #1

The good news: Mariah Carey has landed her 17th Top 10 album on the Billboard 200 with Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse, which debuts on the chart at #3. The bad news: The album only sold 58,000 copies in its first week, i.e. just below the low-end (60,000) of what Billboard had been projecting last week for Mimi’s latest. This marks the lowest opening week for a (non-holiday) studio album by Carey. (Her last pop album, 2009’s Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel, moved 168,000 copies out of the gate.)

Meanwhile, Coldplay stick around in the top spot for a second week, as the UK band’s sixth album Ghost Stories sold another 83,000. The next debut after Mariah is Austin Mahone‘s sophomore EP The Secret. The mostly-RedOne-produced pop set goes in at #5 with 46,000 copies sold.
