Lana Del Rey’s “Brooklyn Baby” Surfaces Online: Listen To The ‘Ultraviolence’ Gem

Lana Del Rey‘s “Brooklyn Baby” has surfaced online, a day prior to its proper debut.

On May 27, Del Rey had shared a lo-fi snippet of the song, where crystalline guitars and her affected jazz vocals could barely be heard through the haze. Compared to the actual song, it played out like the sort of found footage that she compiled for “Video Games” – a savvy move that has made the actual reveal all the more surprising.

In “Brooklyn Baby,” her slight warble actually cuts through wall of sound at times. And toward the end, just when a wash of sound threatens to overtake her, her voice flutters and declares, “Yeah, my boyfriend’s pretty cool, but he’s not as cool as me.”

Del Rey’s fascination with submissiveness can be found all over Ultraviolence, at least from what’s been revealed so far, from the brooding lead single “West Coast” to the Crystals-referencing title track (“He hit me and it felt like a kiss,” a line that still startles today). In comparison, “Brooklyn Baby” sounds like a moment of personal triumph.
