Kanye West’s ‘New Testament’ Documentary Surfaces: Watch

Kanye West does not appear in New Testament, a 34-minute documentary that surfaced online today (June 11). Instead, to orchestral suites by Radiohead‘s Jonny Greenwood, New Testament paces through found footage unfolds to sound bites from interviews over the years with Zane Lowe, Jimmy Kimmel, Power 105’s The Breakfast Club and more.

Occasionally, a celebrity pops up: Britney Spears, as she appeared for Pepsi; Lil Wayne, as he did for Mountain Dew; Taylor Swift sitting down, before an Asian girl appears and pulls a blond wig over her head. (Oof.) But the point of New Testament isn’t to align himself with them. Instead, as the sound bites verify, West stresses that he is the next Andy Warhol, Walt Disney and Steve Jobs, but as they are right now, corporations will not allow him to be as great. To take in New Testament, particularly first thing in the morning, is to feel both empowered, intimidated and even a little panicked all at once.

Highlights include a tense interview with hip-hop authority Sway Calloway, set to footage of a man attempting to be a snake charmer, and a talk he plans to have with his daughter, North West, set to “Wow It’s mom, but I’m sleepy.”
