Whatcha Say: Kanye West, Lana Del Rey And Beyonce Got Our Readers Talking

Rachel Sonis | June 13, 2014 6:00 pm

It’s Friday, everyone! Do you know what that means? A round up of another crazy week of pop, of course.

This week was big for “Gangnam Style” Gentleman PSY, who released his wild new video for “Hangover” featuring rapper Snoop Dog. And, equally as bizarre, Kanye West dropped his 34-minute documentary, New Testament, with seemingly random video clips stringed together between Kanye’s stream of consciousness.  As if that wasn’t enough, our favorite raunchy “It Girl” Miley Cyrus performed her angry banger “FU” in Milan whilst holding a naked cardboard cut out of Selena Gomez. (Drama!)

Here on Idolator, we had a bunch of exciting new premieres and interviews for you guys. Nashville singer-songwriter Meghan Trainor released her video for “All About That Bass,” Aussie duo Olympic Ayres put out their upbeat summer single “Control,” and Katy Tiz performed an acoustic mashup of “No Diggity” and “Cry Me A River.” Plus, we had the premiere of Eden‘s (re-)debut single “Too Cool To Dance.” Phew!

Want more? Have no fear — the Idolator Song of The Summer contest is here! Will Iggy Azalea be the one to emerge on top with “Fancy,” or will Jason Derulo, Ariana Grande, Calvin Harris, Nico and Vinz, MAGIC! or Ed Sheeran steal the lime-light from her? Help us decide what 2014’s Song of the Summer will by voting next week!

As per usual, you guys had plenty to say. Here are some of the week’s best comments below!

:: Cher very carefully considered Nicki’s fate on Nicki Minaj’s “Pills N Potions” Video: Watch Her Get Emotional & Go Topless In A Preview Clip: “Considering this isn’t a ‘Starships,’ ‘Super Bass,’ or even a ‘Moment 4 Life’ type of song, I see the song as being a grower. It’s already at #42 on the Top 100 after being at #47 last week and that’s a vast improvement on her previous singles like “High School.” Most songs drop without after its debut week without much airplay or a music video, and it looks like her promo is just beginning. It may not reach the heights of “Fancy” or “Birthday,” but who knows? It looks to be more of a slow-burning hit. NIcki clearly isn’t out to be #1 anymore but seems to be wanting to earn more respect and that counts for a lot than having a hit single and then disappearing like most acts do.”

:: jemimah wasn’t feeling PSY’s and Snoop’s new video on PSY And Snoop Dogg’s “Hangover” Video: Review Revue: “The worst song ever made, without a doubt…”

:: CarteA M. loved Jacob Latimore’s latest single on Jacob Latimore Teams Up With T-Pain On “Heartbreak Heard Around The World”: Idolator Premiere : “YES! I love it, like all his other music. Of course Jacob has another hit on his hands. THIS IS THE SUMMER 2014 JAM!! That voice will be on CLASSICS!!! Playing for many many generations to come. He has a very bright future ahead of him.”

:: Matt was pleasantly surprised by Lana’s new track “Brooklyn Baby” on Lana Del Rey’s “Brooklyn Baby” Surfaces Online: Listen To The ‘Ultraviolence’ Gem : “This was SO much better than I expected. Lana never disappoints!”

:: And when it came to Lana’s album in general, SamanthaCarolina was simply dumbfounded on Lana Del Rey Ponders “Is This Happiness” On Sublime ‘Ultraviolence’ iTunes Bonus Track: Listen: “This record is devastatingly beautiful. I am left dumbfounded after each song thinking, “how can one person have such a profound and brilliant mind?” This record only cements the fact that Lana is a once in a life time type of artist.”

:: MusicManDave gave it up for Celine’s very bored fan on Celine Dion Responds To “All By Myself” Viral Video, Offers Fan The Use Of Her Toilet: “So first Richard you are gutsy creating and posting this video. When there’s virtually nothing to do at the Las Vegas airport you had more than enough time concepting and creating this video in hopes of retaining a little attention and it paid off. Celine Dion found the time in her busy schedule to respond to it. That is just pure luck! I would definitely take her up on her offer. She is now a friend for life. What a great posting.”

:: Syleena Johnson’s mother Brenda L Thompson gave her daughter a shoutout on Beyonce’s ‘June Birthday Playlist’ Includes Songs From Prince, Iggy Azalea & Lana Del Rey : “I am very happy with Beyonce’s choices especially Kanye & Syleena Johnson’s ‘When It All Falls Down.’ Thank you Beyonce for recognizing my daughter Syleena Johnson.”

:: davidsask wasn’t impressed with Maroon 5’s preview of new single, “Maps” on Maroon 5′s “Maps” Teased In Preview Video: Watch : “More of the same, King douche wailing like he has tummy ache, thinking its romantic and cool, and all the minions will still follow sadly!”

:: Wendy praised Yeezy for his honesty on Kanye West’s ‘New Testament’ Documentary Surfaces: Watch: “Kanye West always delivers. Everything he says is the truth and that is why people get so angry and dislike him. Kanye is who is and that is ok as we are who we are. Kanye chooses to be who he wants to be and that is what makes him stand out.”

:: And Liz agreed: “I happen to love Kanye because he is so unfiltered. I went to the Yeezus concert and it was a once in a life time experience. By far the best concert I have ever attended! I love that he chooses to be himself. I can admire a person like that rather than one who tries to cater to the masses.”
