Katy Perry & Kacey Musgraves Meet At CMT’s ‘Crossroads’ Special: Watch

Katy Perry and Kacey Musgraves made for an unlikely pair in their June 13 CMT’s Crossroads special.

They knew it, too – at one point, they dubbed the show “Hollywood meets Nashville.” And their voices cannot be more different. While Perry once aspired to play at Lilith Fair, she now belts through her anthemic hooks as if she was always geared for arena tours. Musgraves sounds sweeter, as if she would never try talking over someone, while making her sharp tongue all the more surprising.

Such differences made “Firework” tough to pull off as a ballad, as they tried during Crossroads but didn’t quite pull off. Perry also revealed that Musgraves had originally offered Same Trailer Different Park‘s “Follow Your Arrow” to her for Prism (fun fact!), though not even their duet could change how it sounds like a Kacey Musgraves song, through and through.

But while running through tweaked renditions of hits like “Teenage Dream” and “Step Off,” plus a cover of Dolly Parton‘s “Here You Come Again,” the Billboard cover stars proved how rewarding it can be to embrace their differences, if not simply set them aside. More often than not, their voices complemented, rather than competed with each other – thank goodness. Their wisecracking was fun to watch, too. “One time Katy told me I was Dolly Parton without the tits,” Musgraves said, to laughs.

Here’s to hoping Perry and Musgraves meet at a similar Crossroads again, soon. Watch the special in its entirety up top.
