Sam Smith Wows ‘Letterman’ With Performance Of “Stay With Me”: Watch

When Sam Smith performed “Stay With Me” on Saturday Night Live in March, he was forceful. He made sure that every note could be heard over his backing choir. And while sounding anguished, he would step away from his mic stand, then wave his hands wildly, as if demanding answers.

Smith performed “Stay With Me” again last night (June 18), this time at Late Show with David Letterman. The British singer was backed by a choir, as required. As usual, his voice was exquisite. Despite his pleading words, though, Smith was calm– as if at peace with whoever wronged him.

Considering how his well-received debut In the Lonely Hour is about unrequited love, Smith’s latest performance was a lovely thing to see. Unrequited love can be gut-wrenching, though as he’s clearly figured out, dealing with it can do wonders.

“Oh my god,”  host David Letterman said at the performance’s end. Watch Sam Smith perform “Stay With Me” at Letterman up top.
