Yep, you heard it right: King of Funk Prince wrote a new track called “This Could Be Us,” and he’s using the World Wide Web as his muse. Inspired by the #ThisCouldBeUsButYouPlayin’ Meme of Prince and Apollonia cruising on a motorcycle in the 1984 movie Purple Rain, the track will be featured on his much-awaited upcoming solo album.

In a recent interview with the Minneapolis’ Star Tribune, Prince let reporter Jon Bream listen to the new jam, which Bream later called “a joyful ballad with some ecstatic Prince vocalizing.”

What’s more, Prince teamed up with UK pop starlet Rita Ora on a track for the upcoming record, which, according to Bream, is “a rare rap song on which the music was as aggressive and menacing as the rapping.”

Prince also seemed a bit frustrated about how slow the release of his album is moving along.

“Every No. 1 song, every Top 10 song, every song in the Top 40 is at least six months old,” stated Prince. “We should be able to make music and put it out now.”

Well, Prince: As eager as you are to put these tracks out in the world, we are twice as excited to listen to them! Keep your eyes peeled right here on Idolator for more news on the songs as well as the upcoming record.
