Shawn Mendes Streams Debut EP Sampler: Listen

Vine superstar Shawn Mendes has revealed a preview of his debut self-titled EP, out July 28.

Earlier this month, Mendes released the four-song EP’s lead single “Life of the Party” and became the youngest artist to have a debut single premiere on the Top 25. The Ontario native, age 15, started gaining attention last year by posting covers of pop songs — from Justin Bieber‘s “As Long As You Love Me” to Rihanna‘s “Stay” to Lana Del Rey‘s “Summertime Sadness.” Based on his EP preview, featuring 90 seconds of each song, Mendes has come closer to finding his voice.

In the breezy “Show You,” Mendes whistles as he lands on new ways to say “Haters gonna hate.” While at a party in the jangly “One of Those Nights,” he notices, but isn’t deterred by, drunk girls crying. All Mendes wants to do is live life for today. He often sings of that exact notion, and he even takes a bold exercise in storytelling for closer “The Weight,” where he imagines himself as a husband finding out that his wife cheated on him. While Mendes rose to fame via seconds-long clips, his EP shows that he’s gunning for staying power.
