Whitney Houston would have turned 51 on August 9. That day, stars ranging from Beyonce to Missy Elliott and her friend Brandy paid tribute to the late pop superstar by taking a brief moment on social media to remember how she influenced and inspired them, whether on a collaborative basis or simply through her voice.

Bobbi Kristina Brown, Houston’s daughter with singer Bobby Brown, wished her mother a happy birthday by posting a picture of a cake with candles. Pop songwriter David Foster, who co-wrote The Bodyguard‘s Grammy-nominated “I Have Nothing,” chimed in to say that he misses her dearly. Elliott remembered a time when Houston actually tried on her Adidas.

Meanwhile, Beyonce simply posted a photo on her official site, after years of confessing how inspired she was by Houston’s 1991 Super Bowl XXV performance of “The Star Spangled Banner.”

“I, like every singer, always wanted to be just like her,” Beyonce said in 2012 to Essence, shortly after Houston died. “She is our queen and she opened doors and provided a blueprint for all of us.”
