At this Sunday’s (August 24) MTV Video Music Awards, Pharrell will be the one male facing off against female pop forces Beyonce, Miley Cyrus, Iggy Azalea and Sia in the Video Of The Year category. And of course we all know those names today, but who remembers that Panic! At The Disco once waltzed away from the VMAs with a Video Of The Year moonman? Or what song Green Day nabbed the award for in 2005? Or what year Britney Spears emerged victorious in the category?

Ahead of the latest staging of MTV’s annual extravaganza, we decided to flash back through the past decade, all the way back to 2004, to refresh our memories on exactly which artists and songs won the big prize on VMAs night. We then compiled snippets of all the winning clips into one two-and-a-half-minute video, which you can watch above.

Also, sure, the VMAs are all well and good, but don’t forget to check out our 2014 Idolator Video Floppy Awards, where we salute the lesser-lauded visuals of the pop world!
