Last summer, Dev Hynes and William Orbit‘s brief Twitter exchange fueled rumors that Hynes was cast as one of the many producers on Britney SpearsBritney Jean (released in November 2013). The speculation ended up being true, but his work for the project was ultimately rejected. A little over a year later, two of the demos that Hynes recorded for the Princess of Pop have surfaced online.

The first one is an airy mid-tempo that’s filled with computerized glitches and Hynes’ whispering “Leave us alone,” which Spears’ breathy coos would have worked wonders on! The second demo is a melodic ballad with a beautiful piano melody at its core.

Listen to both demos from Dev Hynes after the jump.

The two tracks noticeably have more of an indie-pop flair associated with Sky Ferreira, Solange and his own Blood Orange, yet one could just imagine how amazing Spears could have sounded on them. It’s really too bad that the singer traded in these emotive tracks for more of a robotic vibe that completely overwhelmed Britney Jean – thanks Will.i.am.

The singer-songwriter was just as shocked about the demos popping up as the rest of us, tweeting:
