Jennifer Hudson is making her media rounds as she promotes her third album JHUD (released on September 23), and her latest stop was on last night’s Late Night With Seth Meyers. The singer sat down with the host to talk about the new LP and how it allowed her to become more expressive.

“It represents my person and not so much the ‘Jennifer Hudson’ persona,” she explained to Meyers. “It’s all about the groove, so find your groove in this album!” Hudson also has a new alter-ego, which was born during the creation of her album packaging.

Calling it “Jones,” the singer said, “When we were doing the album packaging, the image came about. I was like, ‘Who is that? That’s not me!’ It kind of gave me Grace Jones, so that’s where it came from.” Well that explains the super-fierce album cover!

Hudson also reveals a fun fact to the audience: she used to sing at gay clubs! “I had a whole glam squad of drag queens, and they would dress me up, and do my costumes and make-up. You couldn’t tell me nothing!”

During the second part of the interview, Hudson talks about her 5-year-old son’s love for dancing and how she celebrated her 33rd birthday.
