‘The Voice’: Gwen Stefani, Pharrell Williams, Adam Levine & Blake Shelton Complete Their Teams

To pose the age-old (or, more accurately, a three-year old) question of The Voice: is it better to try out early in the competition when the coaches are still working out their preferences, or later in the competition when they have limited spots to fill?

Early. Duh. Early in the competition, Gwen Stefani, Pharrell Williams, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton will take anyone who doesn’t brutalize an Adele song, whereas later it takes a whole lot of special…or the “let’s get this over with” syndrome that comes with being the last coach with an incomplete team.

There were a few special performers, and a few “lets get this over withs” on Monday’s Blind Auditions finale. Here’s how the teams netted out:

Matt McAndrew, 23 – Pennsylvania

Recent University Of The Arts graduate Matt McAndrew is working at a grocery store, because apparently there is a low demand for voice majors in the work force (go figure, right?). The tattooed pop rocker performs Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years,” and although there are some rough, shaky moments, his tone and emotion stand out. Adam, Blake and Pharrell all fight for him

“I was really moved by what you did,” says fellow tattoo aficionado, Adam. “It stopped being the show, and it turned into something I was thoroughly enjoying.”

“Your voice is interesting, and even when your voice is soft it’s really intense,” says Blake.

“I’ve been waiting for a voice like this,” says Pharrell. “We’ll pick the songs that you want to do.”

Matt takes a moment to bask in the flattery of the guys vying for his choice before joining Team Adam.

Brittany Butler, 21 – Massachusetts

Having already found a bit of success with covers on YouTube, Berklee College Of Music student Brittany Butler is ready to take it to a bigger stage. The jazz and R&B singer performs bossa nova classic “The Girl From Ipanema,” and her solid performance causes both Gwen and Pharrell to turn around.

For anyone waiting for Gwen and Pharrell to turn on one another: it’s never going to happen. Even though this is the first time they are battling solo for a contestant, it is, as Adam calls it, “a candy cane sword fight.”

“That was so good,” says Gwen. “There’s a whole package going on and I would really love for you to be on my team and we could do some really fun stuff together.”

“I’m not used to seeing anybody embrace such an incredible jazzy tune like that. I could use someone like yourself to collaborate with,” says Pharrell, adding, “Gwen would be awesome for you too.”

The two then hold hands (no, seriously) as Brittany deliberates. She joins Team Pharrell, which causes no hard feelings for anyone.

Ryan Sill, 20 – Virginia

Note to everyone: never go to taco night at Voice contestant Ryan Sill’s house. His family enthusiastically sings every part of dinner fiesta, with each family belting a different ingredient. Ryan, for example, sings “guacamole” on loop, while his dad’s involvement is to tolerate his family’s behavior while quietly counting down the days until his hearing goes.

In addition to taco night, Ryan’s singing experience includes James Madison’s Exit 245 a cappella group, which has over 800,00 views and counting off their “Titanium” cover. For his audition, he sings OneRepublic’s “Secrets,” and despite the fact that it’s barely mediocre, Gwen and Blake turn around.

“Your voice just sounded cool to me, and I turned around and you looked cool,” says Blake, bringing into question his understanding of the word “cool.”

“You surprised me with some of your high notes,” says Gwen. “There are things we can work on together to make you feel even more relaxed.”

Ryan joins Team Gwen, and has a lot of work to do before the Battle Round.

Fernanda Bosch, 17 – Florida

Getting “I Try” stuck in viewers’ heads for the foreseeable future, Miami native Fernanda Bosch sings Macy Gray’s biggest hit for her audition. Fernanda, who grew up in a family who celebrated their Venezuelan heritage through music, has a tone ever so slightly less raspy than Gray, and throws in some breaks and sweet notes for good measure. Gwen and Blake turn around.

“You have that natural sandpaper gravel rasp, and when you go up in your upper register it is badass,” says Blake.

“I was 17 when I started No Doubt,” Gwen reminds everyone. “She’s got a lot of range, and she’s got the timing.”

Unimpressed by No Doubt’s origin story, Fernanda picks Blake.

Beth Spangler, 30 – South Carolina

Beth Spangler has leather overalls, a striped shirt, a killer blonde bob and mondo spikey earrings. This girl’s ensemble just screams Team Gwen, and it’s semi-miraculous that she’s not singing “Don’t Speak.”

Gwen, Jr. sings Beyoncé’s “Best Thing I Never Had,” and really belts out her ambitious choice. It’s soulful, powerful, and only mildly goat-ish in the upper register. All four coaches turn around, and seem almost resigned to the fact that she was born for Team Gwen.

“You were just effortlessly melding so many different influences,” says Pharrell, who loves her so much he won’t sit down. “I think everybody should be standing up right now after that performance.”

“The best thing about you, so far, is that you don’t immediately get a feeling that this person wants to fit in this genre,” says Adam. “We can make you the absolute best version of yourself.”

“That was so beautiful, and your range is crazy,” says Gwen, who then plays the “We’re both girls!” card, followed by some bribery. “Do you like clothes? I can so hook you up.”

Get this: Beth joins Team Adam! This shocking twist completes Adam’s team, reminding Gwen (and America) to only judge books by their covers after they have been changed into major motion pictures.

Griffin, 23 – South Carolina

Griffin (no last name needed), moved to Nashville from South Carolina to make a name for himself, and is still hoping to make that name. Currently, he’s working client relations at a senior living center, but it’s in Nashville…so dream-adjacent. Griffin (no last name needed) sings Michael Bublé’s “It’s a Beautiful Day,” exactly as Michael Bublé would perform it. It’s got the same smooth Bublé tone that calms elevator passengers, and earns spins from Bublé’s biggest fan (Blake), along with Pharrell (who is not familiar with the song) and Gwen.

“I love Michael Buble. He’s one of my absolute favorite artists,” Blake says. “So many elements of what he does is in what you do.”

“I couldn’t believe your range,” says Pharrell. “While I wasn’t familiar with the song, I’m adaptable.”

“Your voice was so rich, it was so deep,” says Gwen. “I think it would be really fun to work with you.

Griffin (no last name needed) picks Pharrell (no last name needed), confirming that this will be Griffin’s last Bublé cover this season – and completing the producer’s team.

Mayra Alvarez, 26 – Texas

Mayra Alvarez has some big shoes to fill, by reality competition standards: she is from the same hometown as former Voice finalist Jake Worthington. The La Porte native even got a video message from Jake, which did not appear to be from a tour bus.

Mayra sings Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature,” and makes it her own (and a little scattered) with lots of runs. Both coaches with spots left on their teams — Gwen and Blake — turn around for her.

Blake leans on the fact that he was Jake’s coach last season. “How cool will it be when you join Team Blake and you come in one place higher than Jake did last year?” says Blake. “Please, please be in my family.”

“Blake is looking for family. I’m looking for stars,” says Gwen. “You were such a beautiful singer, it’s a shock for me to hear people sing like you.”

Star potential is appealing, so Mayra rejects La Porte’s hometown hero and joins (and completes) Team Gwen.

Justin Johnes, 15 – New York

With just one spot left on any team, Justin Johnes is either walking into a low-odds scenario, or about to benefit from the fact that everyone is ready to move on to the Battle Round. The youngster, who got his inspiration from *NSYNC, sings Passenger’s “Let Her Go.” The boy band leanings come through (specifically through the nasal passages), as does a faux-Bieber swagger. It’s not great. That doesn’t stop Blake from turning around at the very last moment. Hallelujah: it’s time for the Battle Round.

“You have this lower register at 15 that Adam won’t have when he’s 80,” says Blake, in one final burn of the Blinds. Handing Justin a shirt that says “Blake’s Boo,” the country coach completes his team.

The Battle Rounds start on Monday, and bring mentors Stevie Nicks for Team Adam, Little Big Town for Team Blake, Alicia Keys for Team Pharrell and Gavin Rossdale for a mix of sympathy and ’90s nostalgia.
