David Bowie may have just announced a greatest hits collection, but a new song that he premiered today (October 12) on Guy Garvey‘sBBC Radio 6 shows that he can still surprise with his left-field turns.

Sue (or in a Season of Crime)” was recorded this summer with the Maria Schneider Orchestra – the titular bandleader is pictured with Bowie above – and longtime collaborators Tony Visconti. The end result isn’t “Last Dance” revisited, but a freewheeling, seven-minute jazz odyssey. “Sue, I never dreamed / I’m such a fool / right from the start / you went with that clown,” the Thin White Duke wails, as flurrying notes by tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin and trombonist Ryan Kerbele add to the song’s urgency.

“Sue” will appear as the first track in the first disc of Bowie’s career-spanning collection, out November 17 and ironically called Nothing Has Changed. Hear Bowie’s sprawling new song below.
