Lady Gaga Says Men Tried To Take Advantage Of Her In The Studio, Speaks Out About Industry “Sharks”

Yikes. This has already been quite a week regarding alleged artist-producer relations after Kesha‘s reported bombshell lawsuit against Dr. Luke, and now, another pop star is speaking out about her own experience in the recording studio.

While promoting her #1 jazz record Cheek To Cheek with Tony Bennett, Gaga opened up to the UK’s The Times about what she considered to be industry “sharks”: “It’s very hard, this business, and there are a lot of sharks, she said. “I’ve had really awful experiences with men in the studio. Made me very uncomfortable….I didn’t feel like I was being cherished for my vocal talents but was seen more as someone to take advantage of.'”

Gaga has always been vocal about her struggles in the industry, as documented in the video for “Marry The Night,” for instance. In the article, Gaga also confirmed that she was sexually objectified: “I don’t have to elaborate, but when women who are in the business that are young read this article I hope [they realize] that you do not have to put up with that…I hope to be an inspiration that if you’re talented enough, you can work hard and achieve your dreams.”

The Born This Way superstar’s comments are certainly well-timed considering the ongoing Kesha controversy. With any luck, perhaps the act of speaking up and sharing these stories will help to illuminate what could be the not-so-glamorous reality of becoming a pop star — and perhaps even inspire change.

What do you think about Gaga’s comments, and the overall state of the pop industry? Sound off in the comments below.
