Leighton Meester was a hot pop property for a minute in 2009. The actress was riding a wave of popularity thanks to her role on hit teen drama Gossip Girl and had a top 10 entry on the Billboard Hot 100 courtesy of a feature on Cobra Starship‘s “Good Girls Go Bad”. She got to work on her debut album for Universal Republic and released a couple of singles — most notably the Robin Thicke-assisted urban-pop jam “Somebody To Love” — but the project was never released.

Five years later, the 28-year-old is releasing her much-delayed LP without much fanfare. Fans expecting more of the club-friendly pop she first dabbled in will be surprised by the contemplative folk sound of Heartstrings. It’s gentle singer/songwriter fare that evokes images of small town America. There are a couple of dark twists, giving the album an occasional Lana Del Rey-type quality.
