Alec Benjamin Drops Debut Single “Paper Crown”: Watch The Hand-Drawn Animated Video

Alec Benjamin was snapped by Columbia Records earlier this year after generating serious buzz with mixtapes and YouTube performances. The 20-year-old, who hails from Phoenix, Arizona, dropped his debut single “Paper Crown” earlier this week and it’s a lilting gem that showcases the USC student’s singer/songwriter credentials and love of lo-fi beats.

Sounding like a cross between Ben Folds Five and Owl City, “Paper Crown” is very catchy (despite its earnest subject matter) and has serious hit potential. The cute/semi-depressing animated video should also help it find an audience. I love the simplicity of the pencil drawings and the occasional splashes of color. Watch Alec’s impressive debut visual up top.
