Madonna’s Long-Teased “Rebel Heart”: Listen To A Snippet

Back in March, Madonna hinted of a new song titled “Rebel Heart.” That became the first of dozens of signs – sheet music, snapshots, hashtags, statements from Diplo, William Orbit‘s approval – that yes, a follow-up to 2012’s MDNA is coming. But the legendary artist has yet to reveal new music to correspond with her shameless selfies. So naturally, as hype reached a fever pitch, a snippet of Madonna’s “Rebel Heart” leaked online.

Produced by Avicii, the tune has fans drawing comparisons to her 2003 album American Life — an earnest attempt to blend folksy protest songs with dance anthems a decade before “Wake Me Up.” The lyrics have them raising their eyebrows, due to their past tense wording: “I spent some time as a narcissist / hearing the others say ‘Look at you, look at you’/ trying to be so provocative/ I said, ‘Oh yeah, that was me’/All the things I did just to be seen…” (See: her Instagram feed.)

What seems most promising about this snippet, though, is that after her list of collaborators has piled up, Madonna still sounds like she’s in charge. Hear it below.
