One Direction performed for the third time on Saturday Night Live for its December 20 holiday episode. As the preview showed, there are still jokes to be made of the winning boy band’s appeal — guest host Amy Adams planting mistletoe on set, for instance. And to be fair, each member’s starry-eyed gazes toward the (at times squealing) crowd aren’t likely to help, either.

Yet as the English-Irish ensemble sang “Night Changes” and “Ready to Run,” off its new album FOUR, One Direction also sounded convincing as adults — grown men, even. Music by boy bands has long featured expertly arranged harmonies, though as noted a few times before, One Direction recalls the Beach Boys, as opposed to Backstreet Boys, with its new and more mature sound.
