Kelly Clarkson Returns With Anthemic “Heartbeat Song”: Listen
Kelly Clarkson is back, and she’s taking it up, up, up, up all night long.
After teasing the title, release date and a brief teaser of her comeback song last week, the original American Idol superstar has returned with her first non-Christmas album (Wrapped In Red) related single since 2013’s country-tinged marriage jam “Tie It Up.”
The anthemic, arena rock-leaning lead single from her forthcoming album Piece By Piece, which is due out in March according to a new interview, sees Kelly’s pulse raising while falling in love above kicky drums, guitars and hints of ’80’s synths: “I got pins and needles on my tongue anticipating what’s to come/Like a finger on a loaded gun,” she belts. The production is both Top 40 radio-friendly and somewhat unexpected (and vaguely reminiscent of Jimmy Eat World‘s “The Middle”), as the tempo suddenly slows for the song’s sing-along chorus, yet the pop-rock anthem still feels undeniably, classically Kelly Clarkson.
