Mandy Moore and Ryan Adams have mutually decided to end their marriage just short of its six-year anniversary. “It is a respectful, amicable parting of ways and both Mandy and Ryan are asking for media to respect their privacy at this time,” a rep for Moore said to Us Weekly.

When Moore and Adams first got together, they seemed like a mismatched couple. She was a pop singer turned actress who still managed to maintain a squeaky clean image. Meanwhile, he was an indie rocker with a history of substance abuse.

Still, they quietly married in 2009, to collaborate with each other several times in the studio. Moore provided backing vocals for Adams as recently as 2014 for his self-titled album, after doing so for 2011’s Ashes & Fire. In 2012, Moore also revealed that they were working together on her next studio release.

On the rare occasion that Adams discussed his marriage, he would describe Moore as a calming force in his life. “My wife once said, ‘You were like a bird in too small of a cage and I was watching your wings thrash against the side of this thing. You needed space. You needed to just fly free,’” Adams said to BuzzFeed, leading up to Ryan Adams‘ release last September. “And she was exactly right.”
