Ladies, we love you, but sometimes guys just have to go off and do their own thing.

Vanessa Carlton had introduced herself in 2003 with “A Thousand Miles.” And with this piano-driven Top 10 hit (and White Chicks favorite), she became one of several rising singer-songwriters (Alicia Keys, Norah Jones, Michelle Branch) who dominated the charts, while also appearing to be the antithesis of bubblegum pop stars who ruled TRL in the years prior.

On Valentine’s Day, MNEK released a remix that transforms “A Thousand Miles” completely. This young London producer-songwriter isn’t seated at the piano; instead, he sings Carlton’s sweet, soulful melody over a rubbery bass, pounding drums and hiccuping loops interpolating the B-52s‘ 1989 New Wave classic “Love Shack.” Here, MNEK has done the impossible — that is, re-imagine “A Thousand Miles” into a dance anthem for the same cramped dive in the “Love Shack” video.
