Ryan Murphy Hinted That Lady Gaga Would Be On ‘American Horror Story: Hotel’ Last Year
Sneaky, sneaky!
Lady Gaga‘s surprise announcement of her involvement in the upcoming American Horror Story: Hotel, the fifth season of the series, threw the world for a loop. But did you know that the show’s creator Ryan Murphy gave us a hint of Mother Monster’s involvement all the way back in October of last year?
According to Entertainment Weekly, the deal was in the works since last fall. And back in October, Murphy told viewers of American Horror Story: Freak Show to watch for a very specific clue: “In the Oct. 29 episode, the camera noticeably focused on a paper coffee cup with a large top-hat logo. Murphy told EW back in October, ‘That is a big season 5 clue! It’s an arcane clue, but it’s very purposeful, and it illuminates something that you’ll be like, ‘Oh! You dirty bastard!'”
As it turned out, the top hat was in reference to 1935’s hotel-themed Top Hat, and that the title track of Gaga’s jazzy delight with Tony Bennett, “Cheek To Cheek” was originally written for that very same film. Now that is one seriously elaborate clue.
