Mark Ronson & Mystikal Perform "Feel RIght"
Mystikal is James Brown, reincarnated, in their late night TV performance.

One of the more unexpected influences in Mark Ronson‘s “Uptown Funk” is Trinidad James‘ 2012 rap smash “All Gold Everything.” Featured vocalist Bruno Mars lifts the best part of that song’s hook when he sings, “Don’t believe me, just watch” — an M.O. that initially felt fitting when James arrived to the music scene a few years ago.

James had landed a lucrative recording deal with Def Jam after “All Gold Everything” took off only to be dropped unceremoniously two years later. Despite such setbacks, the Atlanta rapper’s got swagger back in his guest verse in Ronson’s new “Uptown Funk” remix, released March 13. “I’m too hot, hot damn! / I like myself on Instagram,” he spits, before he actually thanks Def Jam for the money he’s earned so far — deal or no deal.

Unbeknownst to many fans, James is actually listed in the “Uptown Funk” songwriting credits. Still, this remix feels more like the victory lap he deserves — necessary proof that actually, he’s got the funk, too. Listen below.
