Prince Releases New Single ''What If'': Listen
He follows his two albums of 2014 with an unexpected cover of a Christian song.

Prince and 3rdEyeGirl debuted a new song, “The X’s Face,” last night (March 14) after their opening HIT & RUN tour concert in Louisville, Kentucky. Following the show, concertgoers were emailed studio versions of “The X’s Face” and “What If,” Village Voice reports.

These new tracks cannot be more different: “What If” reworks Christian singer-songwriter Nichole Nordeman‘s song about doubt and faith, to sound harsher than the original. For “The X’s Face,” however, Prince switches from religion to another one of his favorite subjects — sex.

To croaking synths and a grimy bass, Prince seems to writhe as he delivers one vaguely suggestive line after another. In the breakdown, he deadpans, “Go on, take that banana / then get back in your cage.” It all sounds filthy.
