Is this the future of music?

This week, the family of late Mexican musical legend Selena Quintanilla confirmed an ambitious new project: Selena The One, a hologram designed by Nevada tech company Acrovirt to create “a walking, talking, singing and dancing digital embodiment of iconic singer Selena.”

According to the official press release, the “revolutionary” technology will allow a digital Selena to release new songs, videos, collaborations…and even tour in 2018.

That being said, it’s far from ready: In fact, the company plans to launch an Indiegogo campaign on April 16 in order to fund the project, with an asking donation of $500K from fans.

In an interview with Billboard confirming the news yesterday, Selena’s sister Suzette reassured fans that the move isn’t “creepy or weird,” and that it was intended to introduce the “Dreaming Of You” icon to new listeners:“I’m excited at the fact that she will be the first-ever and the fact that she’s a Latina makes it even more awesome,” she explained.

The family reportedly also turned down a potential deal with the Tupac hologram company AV Concept, calling it “not real enough.” This is something that we’re building for another two to three years, so when 2018 comes around they’ll be like, ‘Oh, OK, we get it,” she concluded.

We want to know from you, Idolator readers: Does this idea feel too uncomfortable, or is it an interesting way to let Selena live on in a potentially revolutionary new way? Let us know what you think about this in the comments below.
