Marina And The Diamonds Interview
We spoke to Marina And The Diamonds about new LP 'Froot' and writing her own music.

Marina And The Diamonds recently spoke to PrideSource about her relationship with the LGBT community and criticized artists that actively court a gay following. “I was cynical about it,” the 29-year-old admits. “I felt that people in pop… express themselves in that way for calculated means because they know the gay fan base is extremely loyal and extremely expressive and is a tastemaker demographic.”

“I kind of feel the same way now,” Marina continues. “All types of people should be appreciated. I’m sure the gays would back me up on that!” The FROOT diva also managed to shade a few of her contemporaries without naming names. “On Twitter, I don’t really like it when I see loads of messages from an artist saying ‘I love you guys! I love you guys! I love you guys!’ because I don’t think there’s any kind of intelligence in that.”

The Brit is grateful, however, to have a loyal gay following (“it is a really enjoyable factor for me… because it makes the shows a lot more fun”) and understands why her music connects with members of the LGBT community. “A lot of the reason I think I have a gay fan base is because a lot of the themes, and the core of the songs, are usually stemming from something to do with identity or acceptance.”

While Marina’s argument is more cogent within the context of the full interview, I’m still not sure she conveys her completely valid point — ie. that pandering to the gay community for financial gain/stardom is offensive — with sufficient tact or grace. Have your say in the comments below.
