Carly Rae Jepsen debuted three new songs off her third album E·MO·TION during her concert yesterday (May 1) in Beijing.

Like lead single “I Really Like You,” these songs show what Jepsen does best — sing about love with teenage longing. She pleads in “Run Away With Me” to electric guitars and a driving beat, as if eager to get going already! “I want you to miss me when I’m not around you,” she croons in “Black Heart,” a emotional ballad and personal new favorite. And the mid-tempo title track sounds lifted out of what the Kiss pop songwriter calls “the emotional ’80s” — a key inspiration for E·MO·TION.

“In a pop world dominated by bold, highly sexualised characters whose lives are displayed in glorious technicolour via social media, Carly Rae Jepsen felt like an old-fashioned throwback to a much more innocent time; a twentysomething, teen-acting Tumblr Tiffany, almost,” The Guardian‘s Michael Cragg recently wrote. It’s a fitting comparison, especially after hearing these new songs.
