Miley Cyrus Announces Happy Hippie
The singer's new non-profit group will benefit LGBT youth.

So you may have seen the news going around about Miley Cyrus being genderqueer — due mostly to an interview the occasionally naked V Magazine diva did with Out to discuss her Happy Hippie Foundation (which aims to raise money to benefit LGBT youth) and Miley’s own screen grab of another subsequent article that used the word “genderqueer,” which the singer posted on Instagram.

Miley, in turn, went along with the term, but also noted on Instagram, “NOTHING can/will define me! Free to be EVERYTHING!!!”

In other words, being called genderqueer didn’t phase her one bit — why should it, after all? — but even that, in and of itself, is a label.

For the record, below are Miley’s quotes on the matter from her Out interview:

Miley says she already spent a lot of time struggling with traditional gender expectations—and being resentful that she was a girl. “I didn’t want to be a boy,” she clarifies. “I kind of wanted to be nothing. I don’t relate to what people would say defines a girl or a boy, and I think that’s what I had to understand: Being a girl isn’t what I hate, it’s the box that I get put into.”

Bottom line: don’t try to categorize Miley according to how you think a girl should behave, folks. And, more importantly, check out her Happy Hippie Foundation and toss a donation their way, if you’re so inclined.
