Pop Perspective: Britney x Iggy's "Pretty Girls"
Each Idolator editor gives their thoughts on the ladies' latest single.

After a brief teaser that surfaced yesterday (May 12), Britney Spears and Iggy Azalea’s video for their polarizing “Pretty Girls” collaboration has officially dropped — and it’s a total ’80s kitsch wonderland.

Drawing influence from films like 1988’s cult comedy Earth Girls Are Easy, the visual (co-directed by the Aussie rapper) is filled with fluffy crimped hair, neon-colored outfits and various product placement (that was to be expected). Iggy plays an alien girl who lands on Earth and becomes best friends with Britney. But forget about all that for a second, as this visual is all about Brit-Brit!

Pushing the song’s incredibly vacant tone aside, this is the best she has looked in a long time — yes, even better than the cringeworthy Britney Jean era that I’ve tried to erase from my memory. The pop princess is smiling, showing her fun (less robotic) personality and her killer abs, and —gasp!— actually dancing.

As for I-G-G-BYE? One would think she would be able to master an American accent like she has with her appropriating Memphis by way of Atlanta drawl, which has gotten curiously stronger since signing to T.I.’s Grand Hustle in 2012. But that is definitely not the case here! Britney should have given Iggy more lessons on talking that ’80s valley girl talk.

The song is still grating to the ears, but let’s see if the cute video will help save it from being buried on the charts
