Kesha Swaps Out Glitter & Internet Trolls With Nail Art And Meditation

Sometimes a seemingly insignificant surface change can signify a person’s intense inner transformation, and as absurd as it sounds, Kesha dropping the dollar sign from her name was one of those instances. It immediately announced she had entered a new phase of her career, and in a new interview with Vogue that serves as a sort of State of Kesha update a year after her rehab stint, the former technicolor party monster explains why she effectively retired the persona that made her famous.

As you can guess, she’s doing it for reasons of both mind (“Part of being healthy is being positive”) and body (“Before I went on stage I used to pour beer on my body [as an adhesive] then roll in a bathtub full of glitter. I don’t do that anymore because it irritated my skin.”). The singer explained her new focus on self-acceptance and, this being Kesha, how she will still use her physical appearance to convey that message of growth.

“I really wanted to make a change — be more raw and real,” she said. “I wanted to be more confident in myself — embrace every inch of my body — not try to cover up with makeup.” However, she also added that she’s not done with glitter forever.

In addition to cutting down on the face paint, Kesha has dialed down her internet usage, filling the time with meditation and nail art.

“I don’t pay attention to the Internet or bloggers. I surround myself with positive people,” she told the magazine. “I’ve decided everything in my life should be fun, otherwise — what’s the point?”

It sounds like Kesha is in a much more centered place now, which is great news. And it should be interesting to hear how this new state of mind translates to her next batch of new music.
