Sam Smith is currently recovering from successful vocal cord surgery in Boston. The AP reports that Massachusetts General Hospital announced today (May 19) that the singer is expected to make a full recovery after the suspension microlaryngoscopy surgery.

The good news comes on Smith’s 23rd birthday, the result of a surgical procedure to stop recurrent vocal cord bleeding from unstable blood vessels. The procedure was performed by Dr. Steven Zeitels, who also handled this surgery for Steven Tyler, Lionel Richie and Adele.

Smith won’t be able to use his voice — including speaking — for the next three weeks or so. His next live show is scheduled for July 18, and previously he said after this medical repair he’ll be able “to sing like never before.”
