‘Pitch Perfect 2’ Becomes The Latest Soundtrack To Top The Album Chart

The Pitch Perfect 2 soundtrack mirrors the success of its parent movie this week by topping the Billboard 200, marking the third time a tie-in soundtrack has captured the #1 position in 2015. (Pitch Perfect 2 now joins the ranks of Empire and Furious 7, the latter of which is hanging in there at #5 this week.) Throw the #2-charting Fifty Shades Of Grey into the mix, which has spawned hit singles in the forms of The Weeknd’s “Earned It” and Ellie Goulding’s “Love Me Like You Do,” and it’s been quite a year for movie music in the absence of any blockbuster studio albums from artists so far.

In theaters, the weekend box office take for Pitch Perfect 2 was a whopping $70.3 million. Not bad, considering the film, which stars Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson and Brittany Snow, had a production budget of just under $30 million.
