Beau Biden, Delaware’s former attorney general and son to U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, died May 30 of brain cancer. Chris Martin performed during the funeral service — held June 6 in Wilmington, Del., and broadcast live via CNN and CBS News — because he heard that Beau was a Coldplay fan.

To his own acoustic guitar and faint church organ notes, Martin performed “Til Kingdom Come” — a hidden track off Coldplay’s third album X&Y, which the band released a decade ago to the day. He sang to about 1,000 mourners, including President Barack Obama, former President Bill Clinton and his wife, 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, Delaware Online reports.

In retrospect, it’s tough to think of a Coldplay song more fitting for the occasion, given lyrics like these: “For you I’d wait til kingdom come / until my day, my day is done / and say you’ll come and set me free / Just say you’ll wait, you’ll wait for me.”
