It’s never easy to make the leap from teen idol to full-fledged pop star. For every Justin Timberlake or Miley Cyrus, there are a dozen artists that we simply outgrew. On the strength of “Good For You,” however, Selena Gomez is a pretty safe bet to join the chosen few. The 22-year-old’s first single since leaving Disney’s Hollywood Records is a stone cold smash that completely reinvents her sound.

Co-written by Selena, Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter, “Good For You” is a sensual mid-tempo pop jam that strikes an unusually artful balance between electro and R&B. “Gonna wear that dress you like skintight, do my hair up rear real nice,” the almost-unrecognizable hitmaker declares over crystalline synths. “And syncopate my skin to your heart beating ’cause I just wanna look good for you.”

A$AP Rocky then delivers a tasteful verse (by his standards) towards the end of the song. It feels a little forced, but the rapper’s involvement will open the song up to multiple radio formats. All in all, it’s a refreshingly original anthem that creates a whole new lane for Selena. I love that she’s managed to find a mature and sexy sound without going down the well-worn path to ratchetivity. The biggest surprise for me, though, is her Imogen Heap-like vocal. Suddenly Stars Dance feels lightyears away.
